In South Georgia gibt es die grossen K\u00f6nigs-Pinguin-Kolonien, die wir gerne sehen wollten.<\/p>\n<p>South Georgia ist sowohl der Name einer einzelnen Insel als auch die Bezeichnung der Inselgruppe, zu der sie geh\u00f6rt. Das Gebiet z\u00e4hlt politisch zum britischen \u00dcberseegebiet S\u00fcdgeorgien und die S\u00fcdlichen Sandwichinseln. S\u00fcdgeorgien hat keine dauerhafte zivile Bev\u00f6lkerung aber viele Forschungsstationen unterschiedlicher Nationen.<\/p>\n<p>Grytviken (norwegisch: gryte = Topf, Kessel; vik = Buchtist) ist eine mittlerweile verlassene Walfangstation auf der Insel S\u00fcdgeorgien. Es war (wie in jeder anderen Walfangstation) eine fabrik\u00e4hnliche Anlage zum Verarbeiten erlegter Wale zu Tran und anderen Produkten f\u00fcr die Nahrungsmittelindustrie, Kosmetika, etc. Hierf\u00fcr wird die dicke Speckschicht des Wales \u201eabgesch\u00e4lt\u201c und ausgekocht.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25951\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25951\" style=\"width: Heute kann die Walfangstation besichtigt werden, daneben gibt es noch eine kleine Post, eine Kirche (Whalers Church), ein Museum und eben eine Forschungsstation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25961\" In Grytviken fand 1916 seine auf Elephant Island begonnene abenteuerliche Reise nach dem Scheitern der Endurance-Expedition (<a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Endurance-Expedition\">https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Endurance-Expedition<\/a>) \u00a0ihr gl\u00fcckliches Ende. 1922 wurde Shackleton auf dem Friedhof Grytvikens begraben, nachdem er zu Beginn einer weiteren Expedition gestorben war. hier hatten wir grosses Wettergl\u00fcck und einen Tag mit viel Sonne erlebt.<\/p>\n<p>Die S\u00fcdlichen Shetlandinseln ist eine weitere Inselgruppe n\u00f6rdlich der antarktischen Halbinsel. Die Hauptinsel ist die King George Island, mit vielen Forschungsstationen unterschiedlicher L\u00e4nder. Der Bestand an Makkaronis (Goldschopfpinguine) wird auf rund f\u00fcnf Millionen Exemplare gesch\u00e4tzt. Neben den Makkaronis haben wir auch Gentoos (Eselspinguine) und Ginstraps (Z\u00fcgelpinguine) gesehen. Daneben bev\u00f6lkern V\u00f6gel, Fellrobben und See-Elefanten die Str\u00e4nde und H\u00e4nge. Auffallend waren auch die Giant Petrels (Riesensturmv\u00f6gel). Sie k\u00f6nnen sehr schlecht starten und es sieht immer aus, als ob sie auf dem Wasser erstmal rennen m\u00fcssen, um Anlauf zu nehmen. Als Aasfresser sind auch die V\u00f6gel, die sofort zur Stelle sind, wenn ein Tier verendet ist.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26030\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26030\" style=\"width: Millionen Seev\u00f6gel und Robben sind bedroht. Bis einmal konnten wir jeden geplanten Ausflug durchf\u00fchren, ausser auf Elephant Island. Die Sonne lachte vom Himmel, aber der Wellengang war einfach zu stark. Plan w\u00e4re gewesen, auf Point Wild mit den Zodiacs anzulegen, um den Platz anzusehen, auf welchem die 22 M\u00e4nner der Endurance w\u00e4hrend 4.5 Monate auf Rettung warteten. Shackleton, sein Freund Frank Wild und 5 seiner M\u00e4nner segelten\/wanderten zur\u00fcck nach South Georgia, um Hilfe zu holen. Endlich im August 1916 erreichte das Chilenische Schiff \u00abYelcho\u00bb mit Captian Luis Pardo Villal\u00f3n und Shackleton sowie Wild an Bord die verbleibenden 22 M\u00e4nner auf Point Wild. Zu Ehren von Captain Luis Pardo Villal\u00f3nn wurde eine Bronze-B\u00fcste aufgestellt.
